Much of the gold in placers takes the form of fine grains - the "dust" you hear so much about in accounts of the Klondike Gold Rush. The slow process by which gold is freed from host rock and deposited great distances away causes its breakdown into small particles. Still, larger pieces of gold frequently occur.
